Heading towards the waterfall at the end of the Smugglers Canyon Wash

We took advantage in the change of seasons ( sort of – we do live in San Diego) to head out to the desert in Anza Borrego and climb Whale Peak. Whale Peak affords great views of all of the Anza Borrego Desert State Park, at 5,349 feet you have great views towards the Salton Sea, back to the Laguna Mountains and the Cuyamaca Mountains and north towards San Jacinto. We decided on the southern route heading up through Smugglers Canyon, this is a much longer and harder route then the more typical northern route that most people take to the top of Whale Peak. You don’t need a 4 wheel drive to get out there but I would not suggest going in a normal car, at least take a truck or SUV for higher clearance.
